Checking with the Environmental Agency

Often you can tell from the way a business works whether they are legitimate or not, the first point of contact is with the Environmental Agency, you can ask for their waste career license which will contain a number you can enter on the website. Refusal to provide this will often mean they are not registered and are working illegally or that their license has since expired.

Ask them about insurance

Check out the skip companies public liability insurance to make sure they are fully covered should they happen to cause any accidental damage when carrying waste from your property. Skipping on insurance could become a sign that they want to skip on other factors.

Get a complete breakdown of costs

When you receive a quote from a skip hire company, whether this be for just hiring a skip or skip hire and disposal of the waste itself. You should be aware of exactly what it is you are paying for. Some companies will give you a price for a skip and then add additional charges based on the type of waste you put in the skip, how much of it is being recycled or the date when you return the skip. This can lead to a company appearing to be a lot cheaper than they actually really are when you determine some of these additional costings you were not aware of when hiring them.

You should also discuss skip permits with your company since these will be essential if you are having the skip on a road or public pathway, these maybe chargeable by your local authorities so ensure your company goes into all of the costings required and not just the ones applicable to them.

Company Branding can be important

Also be aware of the law when it comes to a skip company, they are legally obliged to show their contact details on either side of their skip. If you see the same name posted around the nearby streets you will be able to find one that’s likely to be local to you and that are more well known and rated within the area. Companies operating without contact details on the skips may not have a permit and could potentially be fly tipping, it is the responsibility of the business owner to ensure that the company they take on are legitimate or they risk having a fine themselves, even if the company who are working illegally claim to be something they are not.
